How does online learning actually work?

Many professionals are turning to online learning as a way of gaining their qualifications while they continue to work. Studying online can offer you greater flexibility, making it easier for you to study without disrupting your personal and professional life.

Depending on the program and institution, online learning may consist of synchronous (live) sessions that you need to be available for or asynchronous (non-live) sessions that you can access when it suits you. In most cases you’ll be set weekly assignments and receive regular feedback from faculty.

What’s required from you?

Studying online for a degree is a serious undertaking and not something to be considered lightly. It requires:

The online classroom

On your start date, your online classroom will be available for you to log in. Here you will find the schedule for your first module, an introduction from a faculty member and everything you need to start your online programme.

The online classroom will involve:

  • reading texts and using rich media,
  • weekly written assignments and discussions,
  • writing short articles, with references,
  • posting to the (private) online discussion forum,
  • reading and responding to posts from peers and faculty.

Assessment

There are no exams with a University of Liverpool online degree - you will be continuously evaluated based on your classroom participation and the academic quality of the research and assignments you submit. You will also be assessed on a final research project, such as a dissertation, consultancy project or thesis.

As well as feedback from your peers, you’ll receive feedback and grades from faculty throughout each module of your degree so that you know what progress you’re making. This ongoing assessment ensures that you meet the University’s high standards

Resources

As an online student with the University of Liverpool you will have access to many resources to support you with your studies.

Our online library is available 24/7 and is the same online library used by the University of Liverpool on-campus students. It is a fantastic resource and our students see it as a real asset to support them with their studies.

Students will also be able to take advantage of the Writing Centre. The aim of the Writing Centre is to help students become better academic writers. A Writing Tutor can provide feedback on assist you in producing writing that is organized, concise, and cited and referenced correctly.

Receiving your degree

Success in an online degree programme leads to a University of Liverpool qualification that is every bit as valid and credible as an equivalent degree earned on campus.

You can receive your degree certificate by post or you can travel to Liverpool to receive it in person at an official graduation ceremony together with campus students.

You’ll be graded on your participation in the online classroom as well as on the academic quality of your assignments and research. This ongoing assessment ensures that you meet the University’s high standards. There are no exams (except for an online oral ‘viva voce’ for doctoral students).

Relevant projects

Your assignments and class discussions are normally based on ‘live’ work issues, and our small class sizes mean you can explore ideas and solutions in real depth. You will usually carry out group projects in a close-knit team of three or four, often across distant time zones, but you will also get plenty of opportunity to show how well you can work independently.
